There’s a lot of misunderstanding about what a sanctuary city is. It doesn’t mean illegal immigrants are protected from capture by federal authorities. It refers to something completely different. When someone is arrested by the local police for a non-immigration related crime, and it’s discovered that they’re in the country illegally, the police notify ICE to come and collect them, and will hold them for 72 hours. This happens everywhere. In non-sanctuary cities, the person is held as long as necessary until ICE arrives. In sanctuary cities, they’re released after 72 hours (assuming they would have been released anyway) whether ICE has shown up or not. So all a sanctuary city is, is one that doesn’t violate the law and doesn’t hold suspects indefinitely until ICE finally gets around to picking them up.
